How To Find A Qualified Contractor To Work On Your Home
The issue.
There are many ways to know if a contractor is qualified to work on your home or not. There are also some very basic ways to find out BEFORE they start work. I am going to help you understand there is no risk to hiring a contractor only some research required!
First things first is you need to ask them how long they have been doing this particular line of work as well as their qualifications. If they pause or seem unsure or if their credentials sound shaky at all you are well within reason to ask for proof. If they get offended at this then do not hire them! Simple as that.
Once you know they are qualified ask them if they are registered. This will differ from state to state. They need to be endorsed by something at the state or county level to be considered a proper contractor. They will either have a registered business or some sort of contractors certificate. You should check this, because don't we all want proper contractors?
At this point you have determined they are a good contractor all teh paperwork is in order. Great. There is a key thing that a lot of contractors will try to skip out on.
Building Permits.
These are essential. You cannot do construction without them. Some repairs require them also. Again this is something that differs from area to area. As a rule of thumb anything under $1000 does not require a permit but you should still check. A contractor who will not get a building permit is a contractor who will skimp on other things. Don't ever forget a building permit is a legal responsibility. If they are not willing to obey the law. How much more willing will they be to skimp on your home!
You should try to find some testimonials by previous clients to find out how their work is. If you can't find any, ask for some.
Lastly, and most importantly, you have the right to have things done properly, to ask questions and know what is going on as well as all the costs of the project. Do not let a contractor blindside you! Stand up for yourself!
